Between Vision and Backstage. All About the New Inspirational Wall Collection Setae Lucensis

Date

Setae Lucensis is the latest collection launched by Viero Decoratives as part of the Made in Tuscany inspirational line. Through this new range of decorative wall finishes, the brand’s vision is reinforced—one increasingly focused on building connections between different worlds (fashion, design, interior decoration) and establishing a unique relationship with the region it calls home: Tuscany. The goal is to bring to life a new concept of walls as living, expressive, and emotional surfaces.

Setae Lucensis, designed exclusively by Viero Decoratives’ master artisans, is inspired by the ancient silk tradition of Lucca. In the Middle Ages, Lucca was a renowned center for luxury textiles, supplying the finest courts across Europe.

The Allure of a Wall that becomes a Storytelling Fabric

“With Setae Lucensis, the fourth chapter in the Made in Tuscany collection,” explains Elena Rosellini, Export Marketing Manager, “we wanted to imagine the wall as a storytelling fabric—capable of evoking sensations, telling stories, and deeply connecting with the places and people it surrounds. And we had no doubt about where to begin: from the beating heart of Italian silk-making—Lucca, just a short distance from our headquarters in Porcari. The antique silks of Lucca, their precious threads, refined weaves, and centuries of decorative tradition inspired us to create a collection that speaks through light, texture, and material.”

The collection includes three decorative finishes (Cangiante, Tramato, and Decorato) and one Opera D’Autore, each with its own personality, designed to dress a space with the same care and research that goes into tailoring a garment. Each finish is also available in three curated color variations.

“These finishes,” continues Rosellini, “are not just meant to decorate—they’re meant to inspire. They are designed to suggest, to evoke, to leave room for the creativity of architects, interior designers, and design professionals. The wall thus becomes a blank canvas, a place where both the designer and the artisan can express their creative vision. That’s why Setae Lucensis, like all our collections, is not a closed concept—it’s a starting point for creating customized decorative effects that tell a unique story in every space.”

The wall as an Identity Element: Scenic and Tailored

This concept is echoed by architect Carlo Mazzolini, Technical Services at Cromology Italia:
“When we architects design a home, a hotel, or an exhibition space, there is always that moment when we stop in front of a bare wall—smooth, undecorated. But it’s in that silence that the real creative challenge begins. Because that wall is not just a background. It’s a playing field. A sheet. A canvas. Or, as I like to think of it, a fabric to be worn.
At Viero Decoratives, we don’t create paint—we create ‘garments.’ We see the wall as an element of identity, scenography, and craftsmanship. As designers, we know that a design element is never just ‘functional.’ It is a statement of style. It is personality. It is emotion.
So why not treat the wall with the same respect? With the same love? A decorated wall is a powerful design gesture—it’s like choosing the perfect artwork for the living room, commissioning custom furniture, or having a bespoke suit tailored. It’s not a backdrop—it’s a stage, a protagonist, or at least a vital part of the narrative of the space and its inhabitants.
With Setae Lucensis, we wanted to create our very own runway collection: inspired by Lucchese silk—soft, luminous, iridescent, alive. We chose to dress the walls with materials rooted in Lucca’s textile tradition but created for the world of design. Textures you want to touch, colors that move with the light, surfaces that seem to breathe. And here’s the best part: everything is bespoke. Everything is handcrafted. Every effect is brought to life by the expert hands of artisans, using simple tools and a refined sensibility. That’s the beauty of our work—when aesthetics, history, and technique come together and transform into emotion.”

Aesthetic Richness, Executed Simply: Just Two Products in Setae Lucensis

“The technical brilliance of this collection,” explains Fabrizio Da Prato, master decorator at Viero Decoratives and contemporary artist involved in developing Setae Lucensis, “lies in the intense research behind achieving simplicity—a concept that’s easy to say, but hard to execute.
We shaped the aesthetics using materials and application methods that make high-end decoration both elegant and easy to apply. We narrowed the collection down to just two core products: Marmorin Satin, used to create tactile surfaces, and Silk, the true star of the collection, delivering a silky, reflective, and iridescent finish. Even in the most intricate design—Decorato—application remains surprisingly simple.
The color palette was carefully curated after extensive testing under different lighting conditions to understand the expressive potential of each hue and to strike the right balance between vibrant and muted, light and dark shades.”

Setae Lucensis: Decorative Effects to See—and to Feel

Leonardo Pelagatti, color expert at Cromology Italia, highlights the chromatic story of the collection:
“With Setae Lucensis, we wanted to tell a story of color through material—but not just any material: a noble, living, evocative one. Like silk. Since you can’t always touch a wall, we used synesthesia to stimulate other senses—visual, emotional, imaginative. The touch of silk, its vibration, its way of changing under light—all of these inspired decorative effects that are not only to be seen, but also felt. Color works together with the products and their application—the visual result is the ‘appearance’ that evokes the silky effect.”

The collection offers three stylistic interpretations, each inspired by a different aspect of silk, translated into decorative effects through careful material and color research:

  • Cangiante is inspired by taffeta silk—a vibrant fabric that plays with light, reflects it, and shifts in appearance. The color palette is seductive, mysterious, full of energy. It’s bold and multifaceted, built on reflections and movement. For this line, we selected contemporary shades aligned with current design trends. For instance, the pink we chose veers away from traditional dusty rose, and the contrast with silver adds striking plasticity and dynamism.
  • Tramato takes its cue from tussah silk, evoking a drier, more natural surface where fibers and weaves are visually perceptible, creating a living, tactile texture. The color palette here is warm and organic. We used a ton-sur-ton approach, working with gradients of beige and yellow to simulate the natural tones of raw silk—conveying a sense of authenticity and softness.
  • Decorato is inspired by silk damask and the opulence of Bolognese embroidery. In this line, the surface becomes ornamental, cultural, narrative. Colors are deep, rich, elegant—sometimes dark, sometimes saturated, always sophisticated. We started with bold contrasts (such as blue paired with pink), and then explored more nuanced relationships between light and shadow to create visual layering and depth.

“In Tramato and Decorato,” Pelagatti adds, “the warm/cool contrast is essential, but handled in a subtle, almost enigmatic way. The shades never sit squarely in one category, and every glance offers a new impression. We wanted to create a chromatic ‘middle world’—where color lives in a delicate balance, just like silk under light.”

Unique, Unrepeatable Decorative Finishes—All Open to Interpretation

“Two key concepts,” concludes Pelagatti, “are fundamental here:
First, each decorative effect changes completely depending on the hand of the person applying it.
The artisan, the decorator, the applicator—they’re not mere executors. They’re co-authors. Without them, these surfaces wouldn’t come alive. The beauty lies in their interpretation.
To draw a parallel with fashion, every decorated wall is like a tailor-made garment, sewn around a person’s specific needs—not a prêt-à-porter piece made to fit all. There is a gesture, an intention, an imprint that makes every project unique.
Second, the colors we’ve proposed in the palette are not the only ones that can be created—they’re simply the ones that best express the potential of each effect, in harmony with the visual and narrative journey we’ve envisioned. They are the result of careful study, blending pigment, light, texture, and style.”

Setae Lucensis is a project that speaks of surfaces—but also of people, tradition, innovation, and above all, of color in all its sensory and cultural dimensions.
